Centro urbano situado a orillas del Estrecho de Magallanes, en la península de Brunswick, a 53º 08’ grados latitud sur y 70º 55’ grados longitud oeste. Punta Arenas es la capital de la región de Magallanes y a su vez capital de la Patagonia chilena, llamada antiguamente Punta Arenosa y “Sandy Point” por John Byron (en inglés), durante su recorrido por este pequeño y lejano paraje en el siglo XVII . La ciudad fue fundada en 1848, y se convirtió en el principal eje del desarrollo comercial, cultural y social de todo el territorio magallánico. Aquí puede realizar excursiones hacia los principales atractivos turísticos de la región. Los recursos son en su mayoría bellezas naturales que pueden ser visitadas por tierra, mar y aire. Existe una variada gama en la oferta de las agencias de viajes locales ya sean tours programados para grupos o servicios privados. Es posible recorrer gran parte de la región mediante los caminos visitando lugares como el Seno Otway, de gran atracción turística y científica, donde se ubica una colonia de pinguinos, o continuar por el camino hacia el sector de Río Verde y Seno Skyring ideal para los amantes de la pesca deportiva. Al recorrer los caminos regionales en general es posible observar una variada fauna, con aves como: el ñandú, el cóndor, el cisne y el flamenco. Magallanes es una zona rural de bellos paisajes que ofrece también agroturismo. Al sur de Punta Arenas la carretera baja el litoral central de la península de Brunswick en la ruta histórica por excelencia, por mar o por tierra pasaron alguna vez descubridores y conquistadores, indígenas, colonos y pioneros. Created in 2002 by a group of craftsmen and women of the city, with the support of the Puerto Natales Town Hall, today Etherh Aike Handcrafts Market offers products made exclusively by local artisans, highlighting the culture of the indigenous peoples of the area, as well as the native flora and fauna and the beautiful natural landscapes of the region. The objects which are most representative of their work are textiles made using knitting, weaving and handdyed felt techniques. Designs in saddlery, ceramics, jewelry and carvings in native Wood can also be found.

Alguna vez supe de una historia del águila, esa ave rapaz que adoran tantos pueblos indígenas de América, que vive en los riscos y montañas y que vuela horas y horas, sin esfuerzo, por el cielo azul, a grandes alturas, sin necesidad de descansar. Dicen que es el ave que vive más largo tiempo junto con el Cóndor andino. Algunas especies pueden durar hasta 70 años. Pero al llegar a los 40, su pico se curva, sus alas envejecen y se vuelven pesadas; sus plumas se tornan gruesas y sus garras se debilitan. Por esto se le hace difícil volar y cazar las presas de las que se alimenta. Entonces se enfrenta a la posibilidad de morir. Pero algunos ejemplares se niegan a aceptar su destino y vuelan hacia lo alto de la montaña a buscar el nido en algún risco solitario. Allí destrozan su pico contra las rocas hasta arrancarlo.

Luego esperan el nacimiento de uno nuevo con el que semanas más tarde desprenden una a una sus garras. Cuando estas vuelven a nacer, el águila se dedica a arrancar sus plumas viejas. Después de cinco meses, el animal, completamente renovado, sale a volar de nuevo y puede vivir 30 años más. A cualquiera conmueve esta historia del águila y me viene a la memoria el comprender por qué el ave fénix de los árabes, aquella que después de arder entre las llamas sale viva de las cenizas, se parece tanto al águila en los grabados de los libros antiguos.

Por eso simbolizaba el bautismo y la fe. Para los indios aztecas era el ave poderosa que representaba lo grande, lo alto, lo elevado. Era el vehículo que usaban los grandes chamanes para ascender al cielo. Era el disfraz del sol.

Finalmente y quienes más saben de las aves, quienes las estudian, investigan sus hábitos y costumbres, sus migraciones y lugares preferidos en el mundo terminan diciendo que esta historia es muy entretenida, pero que las águilas no hacen eso, “Su pico no puede regenerarse ni sus garras tampoco. Si les sucede algo parecido, están condenadas sin remedio a la muerte, a no ser que el hombre las alimente en cautiverio”. En principio es decepcionante darse cuenta que no les ocurre esta regeneración a las Águilas pero en los libros de muchísimas culturas antiguas y modernas el águila es un animal simbólico relacionado con el sol y el cielo y también con el rayo y el trueno. Que es considerada la reina de las aves y que en Grecia y Roma era la compañera y el símbolo de Zeus, la principal divinidad grecorromana. En la Biblia es símbolo de renovación. Así lo dice Isaías. Entre los esotéricos es el ave que sabe cuándo una tormenta se acerca, mucho antes de que empiece: entonces vuela a un sitio alto y espera los vientos que vienen. Cuando llega la tormenta, eleva sus alas y deja que los vientos la levanten. Así logra que la tormenta la eleve más

Al sol de la mañana lo llamaban águila que asciende y al sol de la tarde, águila que desciende. Además, era el nombre de uno de los veinte signos del calendario azteca y era también el ave imperial. Los egipcios dibujaban con su figura la primera letra de su alfabeto jeroglífico. Los chinos representan al águila sentada sobre una peña y con ello simbolizan al luchador que aguarda un combate decisivo. En algunos de los más antiguos sepelios reales, mientras el fuego consumía los restos del soberano, se hacía volar un

águila y se consideraba al ave el vehículo alado del alma del muerto en su viaje hacia los dioses. Se creía que la fusión del águila y los rayos del sol propiciaba la alquimia del rejuvenecimiento del rey. Es posible que todo esto no sean solo más que leyendas. Pero sabemos aquellos que siempre nos gusta saber de las curiosidades de la naturaleza y que en ella existen muchos casos de renovación vital tan bellos como el de la historia del águila. Como el caso de la lagartija, que puede reproducir su cola a pesar de que alguien se la corte. La reconocida situación de los elefantes que cada 20 años pierden los colmillos y en cuatro ocasiones a lo largo de su vida vuelve a poseerlos. Sin ir más lejos nuestros delfines o toninas: mudan constantemente sus dientes. También se encuentra en la literatura especializada acerca de la planaria, un invertebrado que vive en los lagos de aguas limpias. Pueden cortarlo hasta en siete pedazos y sobrevive en cada uno. La más sorprendente historia es la del pepino de mar, este es un animal parecido a la estrella de mar y es muy común en el Japón. Cuando se siente perseguido por otros animales depredadores y sabe que está en peligro de ser devorado, empieza a vomitar todas sus vísceras hasta quedarse vacío por dentro. Los depredadores se entretienen con sus árboles branquiales y sus intestinos y él escapa. Luego, con el correr del tiempo, vuelve a regenerarse por dentro hasta llegar a ser el mismo animal de antes. Sea leyenda o no la del Águila, al encontrarnos con ella y observarla no hay duda de su majestuosidad y como ha influenciado en el desarrollo de las culturas de los pueblos y como muchos han tomado decisiones evolutivas con la imagen sagrada e imponente del Aguila.

One time I knew the story of an Eagle; that bird of prey adored by so many native peoples from America, which lives in the cliffs and mountains, flying hours and hours without any effort through the blue sky at great heights, without the need to rest. It is said that together with the Andean Condor, is the bird that lives the longest time. Some species may live up to 70 years. However, when they get 40 years, its beak gets curved, its wings get old and become heavy; its feathers become thick and its talons get weak. This is why it gets hard to fly and hunt the prey to feed itself. Then, it faces the possibility to die. However, some eagles deny accepting its destiny and flying to the highest places of the mountains to look for a nest in any lonely cliff. There, they destroy its beak to pull it out.

Then, they wait until a new one grows, to get rid of its talons one by one. When they grow again, the Eagle starts pulling out its old feathers. Five months later, the animal totally renewed flies again and it can live another 30 years. Anybody gets touched by this story of the Eagle and it reminds me to understand why the phoenix of the Arabs; that bird that after burning in the flames, gets alive from the ashes, looks so similar to the Eagle in the engravings of the old books. Finally, those who know the most about these birds, who study it and investigate its habits, its migrations and favorite places in the world, say this is a very funny story, but eagles don’t do that. “Its beak cannot be regenerated and neither its talons. If something like that happens to it, it gets condemned to death, unless a man feeds it in captivity”. At first, it is disappointing to realize that this renewal doesn’t occur to eagles. However, the Eagle is a symbolic animal related to the sun, the sky and also with the lightning and the thunder in the old books of many old and modern cultures. It is considered the queen of the birds, and in Greece and Rome it was the companion and the symbol of Zeus, the main Greek-roman divinity. In the Bible is the symbol of renewal, as Isaiah says. Among esoteric people, it is the bird that knows when a storm is coming long time before the storm starts: so it flies to a high place and waits for the winds coming. When the storm comes, it raises its wings and let the wind lifts it. Thus, it gets the storm raises it higher and flies over it, overpassing its damages. For the first Christians, it was the bird that renewed their youth when throwing themselves to a fountain of pure water three times. That is why it represented the baptism and faith. For the Aztecans, this was the powerful bird representing the big, the high, and the elevated. It was the vehicle used by important Shamans to ascend to the sky. It was the costume of the sun. The morning sun was called the Eagle that ascends, and the evening sun was called the Eagle that descends. Besides, it was the name of one of the twenty signs of the Aztecan calendar and it was also the imperial bird. The Egyptians used to draw the first letter of the hieroglyph alphabet with its shape. The Chinese represent the Eagle sitting on a rock to symbolize the fighter waiting for a decisive combat. In some of the oldest royal burials, while the fire consumed the remains of the

sovereign, someone threw an Eagle to fly and this was considered to be the winged vehicle of the soul of the dead in his trip towards the Gods. It was believed that the fusion between the eagle and the sunrays contributed to the alchemy of the God’s rejuvenation. It is possible that all this wasn’t more than legends. However, those who like about the curiosities of nature know that there are many cases of vital renewal as beautiful as the story of the eagle. As the case of the lizard, that can regenerate its tale in spite someone cuts it. The so known situation of the elephants that every 20 years lose the

canines and it happens four times during its life and the canines grow again. Without going any further, the case of our dolphins: they constantly change its teeth. Also, we can find in the specialized literature, info about the planarian, an invertebrate that lives in the lakes of clean waters. One can cut it up to seven pieces and it survives in each of them. The most amazing story of the sea cucumber, this is an animal similar to the sea star and it is very common in Japan. When it feels that is followed by other predator animals and it knows that is in danger to be devoured, it starts vomiting all its viscera until it gets empty inside. Predators get busy with its bronchial tube and its intestines, and the sea cucumber escapes. Then, as the time passes, it regenerates itself in the inside to become the same animal it used to be. If the Eagle is a legend or not, when we find it and observe it, there is no doubt about its majesty and how it has influenced the development of peoples and many of them have taken evolutionary decisions with the sacred and impressive image of the Eagle. La Patagonia para un Niño

LAS LECCIONES DE UN TORO En estos días en que se combinan el descanso y las rutinas diarias del trabajo y del estudio, adornada de imágenes propias de nuestras vacaciones, de gente linda y sencilla de la ciudad pero por sobre todo la gente de campo, quisiera compartir con Uds., una experiencia de cuando niño un verano en una vega al frente se extiende todo un paisaje de esfuerzos y trabajo en la pampa de la Patagonia, aquí mismo siendo un niño de estas tierras jugaba mientras viajaba en la parte posterior de un coloso pequeño arrastrado por la fuerza de un tractor, mientras su hábil conductor controla las celosas maniobras sobre el agreste coirón, salto del coloso y me tomo el tiempo para correr detrás del mismo y de un salto me incorporo sobre él, juego de salto, carrera y la habilidad de saltar nuevamente y quedar sentado, con varias repeticiones se hacía cada vez más entretenido. Sin percatarme, el conductor le coloca una exigencia mayor al imprimir velocidad al tractor cada vez que yo saltaba y quedaba corriendo sobre el amarillo pasto. Coincide que el tránsito se desarrolla en un potrero de grandes dimensiones en donde pastan una serie de animales bovinos, de pronto no sólo estos dos protagonistas se hacen partícipe, un toro de corpulenta integridad se hacía curioso ante mi “jugarreta”, al toro al parecer no le causaba agrado mi accionar y este fuera de la vista y preocupación de hombre y niño, el toro se las emprende corriendo y bufando en contra mío, yo de pronto me lanzo al suelo para correr detrás del coloso y el tractorista haciendo las veces de bromista imprime mayor velocidad de tal manera que no pueda alcanzar el coloso, pero al mismo tiempo que se alejaba él de mis posibilidades de lograr mi objetivo de saltar y sentarme en él, se me escapaba de todo alcance y el toro se acercaba peligrosamente, mientras yo corría a mayor velocidad me percato de la furiosa carrera

del toro y me asusto y comienzo en mi carrera ya no de juego sino de salvar la posibilidad de ser alcanzado por la bestia….. entre mi desesperación grito al tractorista que venía confiado de que aún toda la actividad seguía siendo un simple e inocente juego…..se detiene y así logro alcanzar el coloso y con un agitado suspiro continuamos el trayecto y el toro queda a lo lejos corriendo sin posibilidad alguna de convertir el juego en una evidente tragedia. El tractorista lanza fuertes carcajadas al ver que ya no sigo jugando, sino con un rostro pálido y angustiado como que en mi pequeña mente me imaginaba los acontecimientos finales de la persecución del toro si ésta se habría concretado a favor de la bestia.

Al día siguiente había una “emergencia” que atender en el río cercano, todos decían que un animal había quedado atrapado en el fondo de ese río sólo con la cabeza afuera y con mucha dificultad para salir por lo tanto se requería del tractor para la faena de salvataje. Me acerco ya en las maniobras por ejecutar, sólo mirando cómo mis mayores asistían al animal y con gran sorpresa me voy dando cuenta que mi “amigo” el toro era quien estaba sufriendo una situación muy engorrosa, recuerdo que a pesar de mi experiencia pasada atiné a ayudar a tirar de los lazos y sogas que de manera aparatosa sacaban al toro de tal situación. Cuando ya el toro se incorpora fuera del “pozo” no olvido de su gran envergadura y casi sin pensarlo me subo al tractor lo que causó mucha gracia a quienes recordaban mi experiencia pasada. El toro exhausto sólo babeaba y observaba sin ninguna intención de embestir a nadie, ambos nos mirábamos y sólo habíamos experimentado cada uno desde su postura una vivencia muy particular y casi trágica.

La Ola de Frío

Esta pequeña historia es invernal, me encontraba siendo niño en las inmediaciones de un lugar conocido en la Patagonia como “Tres Pasos”, la denominación de este lugar deriva de que apareciendo desde la dirección que sea, siempre tienes al frente tres vías que elegir de acuerdo a la ruta que quieras tomar, hermoso valle y distinguido por estar rodeado de cerros altos de la Patagonia como el Cerro Onher, Cerro Ventana, Cerro Campana, Cerro Castillo y Cerro Jorge Montt, por el oriente se perfila la sierra Dorotea en sus vertientes terminales. En estos mismos lugares se encontraba la instalación de un viejo hotel que servía de apoyo, refrigerio y descanso para aquellos aventureros de la Patagonia que en largas jornadas de cabalgata y mordiendo el polvo y los dientes de huracanados vientos se hacían valer ante las templanzas de arrieros, ovejeros o simplemente viajeros que vagaban por estas inhóspitas tierras. En mi infancia me deleitaba de todas las manifestaciones de la naturaleza haciéndola un juego avistando juguetonas liebres, escuchando el característico canto del Pitio y clasificar el vuelo de las aves en la intensidad del aleteo. Una corta tarde de invierno y después de un suculento almuerzo y mientras la familia que me acogía quienes eran unos esforzados Tíos que vivían en este maravilloso lugar, escuchaban tanto las noticias como los ya conocidos Mensajes en la Patagonia que se refería a los mensajes que gente de la ciudad se comunicaba con los suyos en las estancias y puestos ganaderos a través de curiosos avisos. Entre mensajes y recados se escucha en la radio una noticia importante de la que tanto los Tíos campesinos como a mí, no dejaron de llamar la atención. cajón de leña pero con mi corta edad puse mucha atención. Y la noticia decía lo siguiente, que por encontrarse en las primeras semanas de invierno y por información del centro meteorológico se comunicaba que la región sería abordada por una Ola de frío, en mi pequeña mente la única ola que conocía eran aquellas que existen en el mar y que a veces son grandes o a veces pequeñas, mi curiosidad me gana y me dirijo hacia las afueras de la estancia y me ubico en los alambrados cercanos en donde hay un paso por sobre ellos como una escalera….siendo pequeño en estatura quedaba muy bien sentado en el primer peldaño, y me acomodo para disponerme a esperar el cumplimiento de la gran noticia de la Ola de frío….. en mi imaginación y en mi paciente actitud todo indicaba que esperaría algo así como una enorme Ola de mar que cubriría toda la región…..mi corazón agitado de emoción calculaba la distancia que había entre mi cómodo asiento en las escaleras y la puerta de la casa para que cuando aparezca la supuesta “ola” alcance a verla y arrancar al refugio de la estancia. Pasaron varias horas y yo seguía estoico mirando hacia las montañas del oeste que casi como un magnetismo suponía mi instinto a que la Ola de frío llegaría por ese lado. El tiempo ya iba minando mi gran paciencia y es muy probable que la Ola de frío ya había cubierto mi cuerpo manifestándose en mis rojas orejas y una nariz y pómulos morados, muchas ganas de ir al baño y las piernas temblando por la inactividad y por la larga espera…..de pronto pudo más la imaginación de que de mi infantil raciocinio y sobre el Monte Campana se perfila en el cielo enormes nubes tipo cúmulos que asemejaban para ya mi inquieta mirada a unas enormes olas que se movían siempre en lo alto y en dirección hacia la estancia, con mi rostro congelado y las manos inertes por el frío tomé la carrera de la salvación, las nubes eran enormes tanto así que sentí que aunque ingresara a la casa estaría inseguro y no encontré nada mejor que meterme debajo de la mesa y esperar la llegada de la monstruosa ola. Mi tío me consulta qué estoy haciendo allí debajo de la mesa y escarchado de frío…..le cuento lo que está sucediendo….pero el tío soportando largar una carcajada me atiende cariñosamente y frotándome las manos y haciéndome recuperar el calor en mi cuerpo me va comentando de qué se trataba la Ola de frío y haciendo mención en que las Olas de frío no se ven como se vería una Ola de mar y al mismo tiempo me indica que mientras me está refregando las manos lo que está haciendo es sacarme la Ola de frío que realmente ya me había envuelto completamente.

Nowadays, when it is combined the rest and the daily routines of work and study, decorated by proper images of our vacations, nice and single people of the city, but overall, people from the countryside; I would like to share with you an experience that I had a summer when I was a boy. In a meadow there is scenery of work and eﬀort in the Pampa of Patagonia. So, being a boy of these lands, I was playing while going on a small trailer taken by a tractor. I jumped from it, run behind it and then, I got into it again; a game of jumping, race and skills to jump again and stay sitting on it. Repeating this many times it became funnier each time. I didn’t notice that the driver increased the speed of the tractor each time I jumped out and run on the yellow grass. Coincidentally, this was developed in a big farm where there were many bovines grazing, not only these two protagonists, but also a corpulent bull was curious about my “game” and it didn’t seem to like it. Suddenly, the bull came running and roaring against me. I jumped out of the tractor to run behind it but the driver started to make a joke and increased the speed of it, so I couldn’t reach it. At the same time, he was moving away and my chances to get my goal of jumping and sitting on it were nothing, he was

far without having the chance to reach it, and the bull was coming closer dangerously. I was running faster and realized about the furious race of the bull and got scared; so, I started my race not to play but to save the possibility to be reached by the beast…I shouted to the driver, who thought this was still a simple and innocent game…He stopped, I reached the trailer and with an agitated sigh we went on our trip.

The bull stayed far running without any chance to convert this game into an evident tragedy. The driver started to laugh uncontrollably when he saw that I stopped playing and I had a pale face and stressed as in my small mind I imagined the final facts of the chase of the bull in case of being concreted in favor of the beast. The next day there was an “emergency” in the closer river; everybody said that an animal had been trapped in the bottom of the river only with its head out and with many problems to go out, so it was required a tractor to save the animal. I got closer, only watching how the older people were helping the animal and surprised, I realized that it was my “friend” the bull suﬀering such situation. I remember that in spite of my experience, I helped to pull the laces and ropes

that spectacularly were taking the bull out of such situation. When the bull was already incorporated out of the “well”, I didn’t forget its size and without even think about it, I got on the tractor and this caused a lot of fun to those who remembered my experience. The bull was exhausted and only drooled and observed with no intention at all to charge anybody; we both looked each other and we only had lived a particular and almost tragic experience from the point of view of each one.

The Cold Wave

This short story is from the winter. I was a boy and being in a place in Patagonia known as “Tres Pasos”, the naming of this place comes because no matter where you are, there are always in front three ways to choose according to the route you want to take. It is a beautiful valley distinguished because it is surrounded by high mountains of the Paragonia, such as Mount Onher, Ventana, Campana, Castillo and Jorge Montt; on the east, one can distinguish Dorotea Mountains in its final slopes. In this area there were the facilities of an old hotel that served as refuge and rest for those adventurers of Patagonia who had long time riding horses and biting the dust of the violent winds, it was worth facing the temperance of the arrieros* (cowboys*), sheep farmers or just travelers going through these inhospitable lands. In my childhood I used to be happy with all the representations of nature, making it a game; looking for playful hares, listening to the typical song of the Pitio and classifying the flight of the birds according to the intensity of the wingbeat. A short winter afternoon and after a succulent lunch; while the family who invited me, some hardworking uncle and aunt living in this wonderful place, were listening the news and the so known Messages in Patagonia, referring to people of the city that got in touch with their relatives in the farms and sheep stops through curious ads.

Among the messages and notes listened on the radio, there was an important new that took my uncle and aunt attention and also mine. I remember, I was playing with some boards close to the firewood box, but in spite of my young age, I put a lot of attention. The new said the following: due to the first weeks of the winter and for information of the meteorological center, it was communicated that the región would be addressed by a cold wave. In my small mind, the only waves I knew were the small or big waves of the ocean, my curiosity was more than me and I went outside and stayed on the close wire fence, where there is a pass over it as a staircase. As I was small, sitting on the first step was perfect to me, so I sat down comfrtably to wait for the compliance of the great new about the cold wave…In my imagination, and in my patient attitude, all said that I was waiting for something

like a huge sea wave covering the whole región…My heart was agitated for the emotion, and I calculated the distance between my comfortable seat in the staircase and the door of the house, so when the supposed wave appeared, I could see it and run away to the refuge of the farm. Many hours passed, and I was still stoic looking at the mountains of the west, that almost as a magnet my instinct supposed that the cold wave would come on that side. Time was diminishing my great patience and it is very probable that the cold wave had covered my body showing itself in my red ears and a purple nose and cheeks, needing to urinate and the legs trembling due to the inactivity and the long wait…Suddenly, my imagination was more than my childish reason, and over the Campana Mount I saw huge cumulus-type clouds similar

to some huge waves moving always in the height and coming to the farm, with my face frozen and the hands inert due to the cold, I took the salvation race; the clouds were so enormous that I felt that in spite that I went into the house, I would be insecure and I didn’t find any better than staying under the table and wait for the arrival of the monstrous wave. My uncle asked me what I was doing there under the table and frozen by the cold…I told him what was happening…but the uncle trying to avoid a big laugh, embraced me lovely, rubbed my hands to recover the heat in my body and he was commenting me about the cold wave. He also mentioned that cold waves didn’t look like sea waves, and at the same time, while he was rubbing my hands he was taking the cold wave out of me, that indeed it already had covered me completely..
